GUNK

CATWALK TO SIDE WALK- “GUNK”

Remember AW11? A walking gimp down the runways of Alexander McQueen; leather body harnesses attached to buckled chokers adjusted to lean necks suspended to the gaunt frames of McQueen models. Leather met latex, risqué met raunchy and a provocative power was unleashed as the bondage boutique range hit the erotic catwalks. Whilst a minority of fashionistas freaked the majority of us females failed, seeking a few studs here and there and a new belt reformed into a choker necklace in an attempt to gesture at least some sign of masochism.

This season seeks a more humble homage to the evocative escapades of fashion’s previous catwalks: ‘GUNK’ (that’s grunge meets punk.) Nonetheless fashion’s shameful endeavour to suppress sex has met blurred lines with its material of the season: tartan, either loved for its granny heritage or infamous for its slut shaming tendencies. Dismissing the various branded attachments to the plaid print however, whips stripped and cigarettes chewed and so forth, this skittish trend has somehow managed to maintain a minute form of maturity.

Various interpretations have been incorporated into the gunk trend , whether it’s the Yves Saint Laurent seasonal collection with its checked tea dresses, covering tattoos in a naïve attempt to look cute or Versace’s glam, punk catwalk hinting at a 30-something cougar mum, GUNK is an on growing evolving trend within the fashion industry. Whether constructing a simple or excessive statement, the subversive streak is key to any punk inspired outfit.

As plaid proposes itself the official mascot to this Winter’s whimsical wind, check cliques have formed as fashion bloggers around the fashion planet have instagram’d, tweet’d and tumbl’d their lavish love for the print. A tartan flannel tucked into a high waist skinny jean, a pleated plaid skirt teamed with a crisp white shirt ensemble or a loose fit check pinafore consciously sported with chunky cut-out boots. How will you channel your inner Nirvana?
